“Invest in yourself and others.” This is one of the main messages board-certified gastroenterologist Jonathan Kung gives people. This young doctor, health and lifestyle advocate, and motivational speaker has overcome obstacles and challenges in life, and now teaches others how to do the same.
The key to greater mental and physical health, as well as greater fulfillment and satisfaction, is investing in yourself and others. This means letting yourself have some downtime and resting, while also getting active and moving your body. For Dr. Kung, this looks like resistance training at the gym, practicing martial arts, and playing soccer three times a week, just to name a few things.
As a gastroenterologist, Dr. Kung spends a considerable amount of time helping people with their digestive issues. He has found that stress is a major contributor to digestive issues, as is living a sedentary lifestyle. That is why he says, “A healthy mind and active lifestyle is a healthy gut.”
When it comes to gut health, it is a two-way street. When you have an active lifestyle, you are improving your gut health, and when your gut is healthy, you have more energy. “Gut health leads to optimal amounts of energy,” he says.
Surrounding yourself with people who reinforce healthy habits and an active lifestyle is something Dr. King has found to be exceptionally helpful in maintaining good physical and mental health. That is why he suggests to “Surround yourself with people who have the same purpose and motivation. Invest your energy in people who share the same work ethic and value the same goals. Move forward; don’t look back. Remember, it is your life, your choices.”
You, above anyone else, should be determining what is best for you. Continuous improvement is the name of the game, and something Dr. Kung feels very strongly about. “Be firm with your choices,” he says. “Only move forwards, and don’t look back.”
When you invest in yourself, you are undoubtedly going to make leaps and strides in your personal evolution. That means you may grow out of relationships to the point where certain people are holding you back. That is why he wants to reassure you that “Not everybody that started with you will finish with you. Times change; people change. Life is constantly changing. Be open to new ideas and surroundings. Keep learning, growing, and evolving every day.”
Dr. Kung’s career as a gastroenterologist helped him see just how important health and wellness really are. He has seen countless patients struggling with poor health over the years, which is why he isn’t taking his good health for granted anymore. He has developed healthy habits, such as going to the gym whenever he is able to get a break from working. This allows him to lead a balanced life and remain focused on his own personal goals and aspirations.
