Fitness model and bodybuilder Jase Stevens is no stranger to photoshoots. Jase is a Toronto based fitness model and coach who has been doing fitness photoshoots for the past 10 years. In that time he has been published in many magazines and used as the face in countless advertisements. He is a seasoned pro when it comes to getting in front of the camera.
We interviewed Jase on what it takes to be published in a magazine from the perfective of a fitness model.
What is a piece of advice that you would give to someone who is looking to do their first photoshoot?
The 5 P’s. Proper preparation prevents poor performance. A photo shoot is not something you want to walk into with out having done your homework. Practice your posing ! Know what poses work for you and how to showcase your body in the best way possible before hand so you don’t waste anyones time.
Practice smiling, there’s nothing worse than a great body with a forced/fake smile. Treat it as work ! If you are a fitness model you are there to work not mess around. Show up on time, be polite, be respectful of the photographer and their time/efforts.
How long does it take you to prepare for a photoshoot? What do you typically do to prepare?
Typically I like to maintain a physique year round that I can get into photo shoot shape within 8 weeks of hard dieting. Photo shoot preparation consists of lowering my carbohydrate/fat intake gradually over the 8 weeks and only as much as is needed to ensure that I am losing the appropriate amount of body fat each week.
Combine that with an increase in general activity on a daily basis, which could be controlled by a higher daily step count or adding in traditional cardio, stair stepper, bike, elliptical and you have the recipe to get photo shoot ready.
What is a piece of advice that you would give to someone who is looking to get published in a magazine?
Network, meet people, make friends with the owners of magazines and the photographers. Always treat it like work or a business, that will ensure people respect you and take you seriously. Work with the right photographers that actually are getting published in the magazines you want to be in ! ALWAYS come in the best shape possible. You aren’t going to get published if you aren’t in shape!
How many times have you been published?
Countless times in different magazines around the world. From Men’s Health across north america featured in full page ads for my sponsor MuscleTech supplement company, to multi page ab workout articles in Iron Man Japan and everything in between including several multi page training spreads in Inside Fitness Magazine.
Jase is one of the top fitness models in the world, a Toronto native who also owns one of the top fitness coaching companies in the world Man The F Up which is the brother brand to Hammer Fitness.
