How Crypto Airdrops Are Supporting Vietnam’s Recovery Efforts

In the wake of Typhoon Yagi’s impact on Vietnam, major crypto firms are stepping up to offer a helping hand. Two leading exchanges have launched initiatives to support affected communities through airdrops. And yes, while airdrops are typically associated with free tokens given to crypto users for clicking buttons, this time the concept takes on a charitable twist—bringing financial relief directly to those in need!

The Crisis and the response

Typhoon Yagi, one of the strongest storms to hit Southeast Asia this year, caused widespread damage to roads, bridges, and local infrastructure, leaving communities in urgent need of support. In response, Binance and KuCoin, two major centralized exchanges, have mobilized to provide aid.

Binance, through its charity arm, has committed up to $1 million in Binance Coin (BNB) to users in the hardest-hit cities across Northern Vietnam. To qualify for this aid, users needed to complete a proof-of-address by September 10, 2024. Those who met this requirement received $50 worth of BNB directly into their Binance accounts. Users who complete their POA by September 30, 2024, will still receive $20 worth of tokens. The first batch of donations began reaching users on September 16th.

This initiative builds on Binance’s history of charitable actions in Vietnam, including previous donations of medical supplies and water filtration systems.

Additionally, KuCoin joined the effort by pledging 10,000 KuCoin tokens (KCS), valued at approximately $80,000, to users in the typhoon-affected areas. To qualify, users had to meet specific transaction and verification requirements on the platform between August 1 and September 12, 2024.

Similar to Binance’s approach, KuCoin’s donation plan involves distributing $20 worth of KCS tokens to users in affected regions. The distribution began on September 18th, ensuring timely support for those in need.
